My sculptures evolve from my own thoughts, artistic inclinations, and sense of humor. I started welding art work in 1973 when I was 16. As I've become more experienced technically and philosophically, so has my work. Using balance, springs, and dead machinery, I recycle both the metal and energy to create moving humor and insights. Motion is key to most of my larger work, using springs, balance, and spinning motions to bring sculptures to life. I use a MIG welder for my Recycled Sculptures and finish with a metal lacquer. I create all my sculptures, from the inception to finished piece. In addition, my life partner Edie Ehlert, does most of the business activity. Since part of my artistic process includes showing off work, she gets to add detail suggestions as well. Perfecting skills while continuing artistic exploration are constant challenges. Flying Machines, which "fly" using small batteries and motors for power, are particularly technical and challengeing. Video is my most recent project, capturing sculptures in motion, and creating motion with animation. |
